Women’s Premier League WPL 2023 Schedule and Teams

How To Play

The Women's T20, now known as the Women's Premier League, is a professional Twenty20 cricket league for women in India. It was introduced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2016, with the first edition being played in 2016-17.

The Women's Premier League features some of the best women's cricket teams in India, and it provides a platform for young and upcoming talent to showcase their skills. The league has also attracted some of the top international players from countries like England, Australia, and South Africa.

As per the latest official annoucement, the inaugural edition of WPL will be held from 4th-26th March, 2023. Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians will face each other on 4th March for the first ever Women’s IPL spectacle.

A total of five teams are locked after the auction held on 13 and 14 February, 2023. Much is said that the WPL 2023 will encourage nations worldwide to establish their own league cricket tournaments.

WPL History

The Women's Premier League is an important step towards the growth of women's cricket in India, and it has the potential to become one of the most popular and competitive women's cricket leagues in the world.

That being said, let’s press pause and trace back its history to when it all began. The first edition of the Women’s T20 Challenge witnessed the competition only between two teams (Supernovas and Trailblazers). Furthermore, a single match between both teams decided the tournament champion for the first year.

Team Velocity was introduced in 2019, the event's 2nd edition, and became the runner-up in the same year. However, the 2020 event was a surprise for many as the Trailblazers defeated the Supernovas in the final and won the 3rd edition of the event.

While the 2021 league's edition did not take place, the 2022 event occurred in May which coincided with the knockout round of the Men’s Indian T20 Premier League. The Supernovas came stronger in the 2022 event and reclaimed the title trophy of Women's T20 Challenge for the third time.

They won by 4 runs after defeating Velocity in a nail-biting final. To summarize, the women's IPL winners list is as follows:

Season Final Final venue
Winner Result Runner-up
2018 IPL Supernovas 130/7 (20 overs) IPL Supernovas won by 3 wickets IPL Trailblazers 129/6 (20 overs) Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai
2019 IPL Supernovas 125/6 (20 overs) IPL Supernovas won by 4 wickets IPL Velocity 121/6 (20 overs) Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur
2020 IPL Trailblazers 118/8 (20 overs) IPL Trailblazers won by 16 runs IPL Supernovas 102/7 (20 overs) Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah
2021 Not held
2022 IPL Supernovas 165/7 (20 overs) IPL Supernovas won by 4 runs IPL Velocity 161/8 (20 overs) Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune
