David Warner Journey in International Cricket
David Warner, the power hitter from the Australian team, made his debut in international cricket by scoring a stunning 89 off 43 balls in a T20I against South Africa. Known for his aggressive attitude as a top-order batsman, David Warner’s cricket slowly and steadily destroyed bowling attacks across the globe over the years.
He has served as the vice-captain of the Test and ODI national team between the years 2015 and 2018. Being in the limelight for his presence and his game, Warner has been a part of a fair share of controversies, particularly the ball-tampering incident in 2018 being the biggest of them.
With much of his T20 success, Warner made his ODI debut again against South Africa in Hobart, where his 69 runs made a mark on the match. Apart from the ODI’s, he continued to take his place and impress all in the T20 format of the game and was the only bright spot in Australia’s first-round exit in the 2009 edition of the World T20 in England.
Being the best and the choice of many, Warner made his Test debut in the summer of 2011 against a strong New Zealand team. And once again Warner’s aggressive touch at the top of the order was fully visible when he creamed a fantastic 119 against the South Africans at the Adelaide Oval in 2012.
In the initial stage of 2013, Warner was dropped by the board due to some disciplinary reasons and was fined for £7,000 and was not even allowed to play for the team until the first Ashes Test on July 10, 2013.
Warner’s Comeback
Finally, when allowed to make a comeback in the Ashes series in Australia 2013-14, he became the highest scorer in the series amassing 523 runs from five matches at an average of 58.11, which included one of the best David Warner centuries ever. He scored two centuries and two half-centuries in that season.
Even after that exceptional season, Delhi Daredevils did not retain him for the IPL season 2014. He was later acquired in February 2014 by the Sunrisers Hyderabad with a successful bid of INR 5.5 crores.
Playing well in the upcoming series and maintaining his standards, Warner scored a fine hundred in the first Test of Australia’s UAE tour in 2014. Scoring a fifty in the home ODI series that was against South Africa to stay in good shape, Warner then smashed three beautiful hundreds against top rival India in the year 2014-15.
Being the 2nd-highest run-scorer for Australia, he got 345 runs in 8 games that included the 178 achieved against the Afghanistan team.
After getting involved in many controversies, Warner witnessed both love and hate equally from the fans. The dispute in the 2018 tour of South Africa was the most remarkable and primarily how Warner’s career will be remembered.
In March in Cape Town, the camera spotted Cameron Bancroft using sandpaper to rub the ball. This crime was later accepted, and Warner, along with captain Steve Smith was interrogated and penalized after that.
He served a one-year ban which also resulted in him losing his lucrative IPL deal and brand contracts. However, his comeback made him a much stronger and hungrier man, the fight for his game was visible in his eyes and his runs in the IPL 2019.
The Australian team had no chance but to take the dashing opener back in their squad, as David Warner continues to be the gun batsman for Australia. Till date, David Warner has scored 19 ODI centuries.
