The biggest extravaganza of T20 cricket action is going to back very soon in the months of April & May in India with the crowds around in a refreshing turn of events. Yes, we are talking about the Indian T20 season this year that is happening within a span of 8 months for the very first time. The reason this year’s Indian T20 season is going to be under everybody’s scanner is because of the fact that the T20 World Cup is about to commence later this year.
Some players that have been released and some players that have registered as new will be up for grabs for their preparation for the world tournament this year. A lot of superstar players will go under the hammer for this mini-auction. Out of 292 players, we boil things down to the following players who will get everybody’s eyes lit on the 2021 auction.
The World’s number 1 T20 batsman has registered for the Indian T20 season and we cannot keep calm thinking which team will pick the hard-hitting Dawid Malan. The left-hander averages a staggering 53 in the shortest format with a strike rate of 149.5 in the 19 international matches that he has played. Imagine the kind of solidity this man is going to give to the team that picks him. Expect Malan to be bought for a decent price with teams getting into a battle for the big man from England.
After being released from the Rajasthan camp, the one team that has been anticipated to buy the former Aussie Captain is Chennai Super Kings. The Dad’s Army is looking for a solid right-handed batter to help them in the middle order alongside Faf, Rayudu & MS Dhoni. Steve Smith hasn’t had the most consistent run in the tournament but he’s a man known for his comebacks so expect him to have an exciting season this time around.
One of the biggest buys from last year’s auction, Bengaluru had to shell out Morris in order to get their 10 crores worth purse back. The all-rounder had a brilliant last season with the ball but struggled with the bat coming for a few cameos but not really finishing well. The South African quick has picked 80 wickets in the 70 games that he has played in the Indian T20 season and Delhi Capitals might just look to get his services back in the mix.
One of the best all-rounders in international T20 cricket, Maxwell had a nightmare of a season last year that cost him his place in Punjab. The right-handed batsman struggled to get bat to ball in the recently concluded tournament while chipped in with some crucial overs. However, looking at the kind of form he has been in lately, expect Glenn to go for a decent price around 5 Crores after he turned out to bomb his last season even after being bought for 10.75 Cr. He averaged only 15 in the last season with a highest of 32 and would be looking forward to changing that this time around.
After having a dream Australian T20 season as an opener, Englishman Alex Hales has registered for this year’s Indian T20 for the very first time. Hales is a tall hard-hitting batter who had a streak of big scores for his team Sydney Thunder in the recently concluded Australian T20 season. Now, what is interesting will be the fact that which teams bid for him considering the kind of opening combinations the teams already have are pretty much in the balance. Kolkata might look to pitch in because in the small purse they have they would lookout to get a batter that would give them a quick start right from the word go.
Another flamboyant English opener who will be up for grabs will be Jason Roy. He missed out on the last season due to health issues and other commitments but will be under the hammer this time around. Roy is a batter who likes to come explosive no matter the score on the board and he can destroy any bowling attack right from ball 1. One of the teams that will expect him in their line up is the Royal Challengers giving Devdutt Paddikal a good senior batting partner who can take the pressure off him.
A superstar with the ball in the longest format, Kiwi bowler Neil Wagner has registered for this year’s auctions of the Indian T20 season. He has troubled some of the biggest batters in world cricket including the likes of Smith & Warner exposing weaknesses the world did not know so expect him to go under a bit of a battle between teams because good economical bowlers are always on the lookout for auctions.
Shakib Al Hasan
The veteran star all-rounder from Bangladesh would be under the hammer this season and will be looking for a great comeback after being banned by the International Cricket Council. Sunrisers might as well not look to get him considering they already have Rashid Khan & Mohammad Nabi in their mix. Expect teams like Punjab to bag him who will be looking for a star all-rounder after they have shelled out Neesham & Maxwell especially with the biggest purse out of all teams they have in this season.
Which team will pick whom? Mention in the comments below as the much-anticipated auctions goes live on the 18th of February at 3 pm live on the Star Sports network and stream on Hotstar.
